HISTORY
The X OVER RIDE can look back on an exciting development since its premiere in 2004. At that time, the event took place for the first time as a small freeride cross event at Langwied and laid the foundation for the freeride culture at Kitzsteinhorn. In the following years, the X OVER RIDE developed into an annual season highlight that included competitions in the disciplines of freeride, slopestyle, and pipe for skiers and snowboarders.
In 2012, the event returned to its roots under the motto ‘Back to the Roots’ and became a pure big mountain freeride contest. At the same time, the X OVER RIDE became part of the Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) Tour. In the years that followed, the event established itself as one of the top qualification races in Austria: Nine times the X OVER RIDE was held as a 3-star qualifier. In 2024, the X OVER RIDE celebrated its debut as a Freeride World Tour (FWT) Challenger Event – and will be held again in this category in 2025.
The glacier in the Zell am See-Kaprun region is not considered one of the most popular freeride resorts in the Alps for nothing. With the first X OVER RIDE in 2004, the topic of freeride also made its entrance at Kitzsteinhorn, and over the next few years, work was consistently done on developing the offerings. The five freeride routes, the avalanche info base, and the permanently installed avalanche search field have now become indispensable at Kitzsteinhorn. The reliable snow conditions and the extensive variety of off-piste options with fantastic cliff drops, wide powder fields, and untracked slopes make Kitzsteinhorn the ideal spot for a big mountain event like the X OVER RIDE.
